After completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1) utilize the newly released National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guidelines for the management of asthma; 2) discuss the central role of inflammation in the pathophysiology of asthma; 3) recognize the paradigm shift in asthma management to preventive or maintenance therapy; 4) employ the "Stepwise Approach" (table) for the management of asthma; 5) manage the patient in an Emergency Room setting and as a hospital In-patient; and 6) recognize the importance of a self-management "Asthma Action Plan".
