How To Treat An Insect Bite

Insect bites and stings are some of the hazards of enjoying the great outdoors. If you've been targeted by a mosquito, bee or other insect, here's some treatment information you need to know.

Step 1:

Know Your Vulnerability

If you are allergic to bee stings, seek help immediately. You may need to carry an epi-pen to counter the effects, or wear a necklace or bracelet that identifies your risk in the event that you pass-out or can' talk.

Step 2:

Remove the Stinger

If you have been stung by a bee, or wasp, try to pull out the stinger, or scrape it out with a card. Don't squeeze the stinger . Squeezing out the stinger will spread the poison into the wound.

Step 3:

Clean The Wound

Use some soap and water to wash off the bite, and help prevent the possibility of infection. Hot water can sooth itchy bites by releasing all of the histamines that cause the itchiness.

Step 4:

Draw Out The Venom

Apply a poultice to help pull the venom out of the wound, reduce the pain, and promote faster healing. Many different sting remedies have been devised throughout history. Using baking soda or toothpaste are just two popular home remedies.

Step 5:

Stop The Itching

Itchy bug bites aren't so painful, but horribly annoying. Apply some anti-histamine cream to the affected area, such as calamine lotion, or lavender oil.

Step 6:

Terminate Uninvited Guests

You might have some chiggers down there. That's obviously a bad thing. Try an ointment that contains jewelweed to ease the itching, or some mint and camphor to dispatch the tiny critters, but try not to scratch the bites, or else you'll risk infection.
